Hi everyone! What a busy few weeks! Our first big news is that we got a new student! Her name is Gia and she fit in so quickly and easily that it seems like she has been with us since the beginning of the year! We are so happy that she is part of our Room 9 family.
Here are some updates about what is going on academically!
In Math, we have moved on to Fractions. The students are loving this because it is a very hands on unit. Miss Pringle is doing a great job integrating read alouds and projects to engage the kids in the new concepts. We are also doing a lot of PARCC practice so the kids are familiar with the types of problems they will see and also become familiar with the language. They love the challenge!
In writing, we are finishing the trimester with one more compare and contrast writing piece. The first big one was they had to write a compare and contrast essay using themselves and a friend that they didn't know much about. They learned a great deal about a new friend and did an amazing job writing them. They are hanging up in our hallway, so if you're in school, stop by and see them! Another big piece is they got to be a little creative and write a story for the 100th day of school. They had to tell all about their lives when they are going to be 100 years old. They had to write about their jobs, family and some fun facts. Most of the boys married Gisele Bundchen - I wasn't shocked. :) Our last piece of the trimester is a non-fiction compare and contrast. Thank you to Melissa Oliver for joining us on Fridays during writing - the help is needed and much appreciated!
In reading, we have been drawing conclusions. They learned about using their schema or background knowledge to understand the author's purpose a little further. We also finished our big Bloom's Taxonomy reading project about their latest chapter book. Most of them went home in the Friday Folder this week and the rest will be going home in this upcoming Friday. They worked so hard and enjoyed all of the different components! They all have moved on to new chapter books and are continuing to work on their stamina and use different strategies. This week we are working on story elements. As always, a big thank you to Kerri McMahon for helping us with our guided reading!
In Science, Miss Pringle and Mrs. Moretti are finishing up the Magnet unit. The students are learning the properties and engaging in amazing hands on experiences. There are some great pictures below of their hard work. In trimester three, the social studies concepts will be government and the science concepts will be Structures of Life, where they will actually dissect an owl pellet! It's so cool!
As you can see, we have been very busy. I can't believe we are already in March! Have a great week!
